The Chance to Shine Alpine Trek brought together a group of eight dedicated individuals. Between October 6th and 10th, 2024, team Chance to Shine tackled the daunting peaks of the French and Swiss Alps, scaling up to 2,700 meters each day – equivalent to climbing Ben Nevis twice. With unpredictable weather and high altitudes adding to the challenge, the group knew this would be no walk in the walk.

While each trekker had their own reasons for taking on the challenge, the goal for the group was the same: to raise enough money to fund three new Street cricket clubs. Each club serves as a community hub, offering a safe space where young people can play, learn, and find support. For Sacha Lee, taking on the challenge was a reflection of her deep connection to the charity’s work. As the driving force behind Chance to Shine’s Street projects in Telford, she has seen firsthand the impact that cricket can have on young people, particularly in deprived areas. “Chance to Shine Street Clubs are literally held within communities as local hubs for activity, as well as a go-to for support of children and young people,” Sacha explained. “This trek was an opportunity to showcase the impact Street has had in Shropshire and raise money to help the charity continue its mission of developing communities through cricket.”

Despite many challenges throughout the three days, the team spirit remained strong, with everyone determined to finish the trek together. “It’s a challenge, mentally and physically, but knowing you’re making a real difference keeps you going,” one trekker noted. Sacha agreed, writing on Day 3: “A truly amazing, challenging day…with breathtaking views. A true team commitment to finishing together. Very wobbly as I crossed the final ridge to the summit…but we did it, together and always smiling.”

For participants like Lucy Verasamy, the trek was a truly unforgettable experience. “The CTS trek was a really fun experience, and I’m so glad I did it,” Lucy shared. “The training paid off, but we definitely felt the near 3,000-meter altitude!” Team member and Chance to Shine Chair Tim Score echoed the sentiment: “Fabulous few days in the Alps, expertly organised and led by CHX. Great way to build a lasting bond between a team of people and a fantastic way to raise money for Chance to Shine!”

For each team member, the personal triumph of completing the Alpine Trek was rewarding in itself, but the real impact lies in the funds raised and the future opportunities they have created for young people. They raised over £43K smashing through the target of funding 3 Street clubs – so many more children will benefit. The trek is a powerful reminder that taking on a challenge – whether it’s climbing mountains, running a race or just stepping outside your comfort zone for a cause – can change lives, both for those who take part and for the people they support.
