More Than Just a Game: How Chance to Shine’s Street Cricket Helps Young People Through Winter

At Chance to Shine, we engage thousands of children and young people in underserved areas through our Street clubs. Even in the challenging winter months, we continue to provide accessible and safe spaces where young people can stay active and connected to their communities.

We spoke with Ryan Gregory, Surrey Cricket Foundation’s Cricket Development Officer, about the importance of delivering Street cricket sessions during winter. As Ryan explains, “It’s not just cricket; it’s about creating a safe, fun, and welcoming space where everyone belongs.”

Building Community Through Cricket

A key strength of Street cricket clubs lies in fostering a sense of community in underserved areas. Ryan emphasises, “It’s very important that they feel a sense of belonging… being part of a community.” By encouraging young people to gather and connect through cricket, even during winter, our coaches build lasting relationships.

“We see cricket as a way to bring people together, no matter their background or experience,” Ryan explains. This camaraderie is especially crucial in winter, a time that can feel isolating for many living in underserved areas. Street cricket offers not just a sport but a vital social lifeline, helping attendees form meaningful connections.

Overcoming Winter Challenges

Winter presents significant barriers to participation in sport. Adverse weather, shorter daylight hours, and transport difficulties often reduce attendance. Ryan notes, “Winter is tough – kids often struggle with motivation and access. We found with our Kingston girls’ session… it’s not ideal walking back in the dark during the winter.”

To address these challenges coaches adapt sessions. Moving to easily accessible locations, such as leisure centres, has proven effective. “Choosing the right venue over winter really turned things around,” Ryan shares. “Attendance went up, and kids stayed engaged.”

Proactively adjusting sessions ensures that children and young people can continue to benefit from the access to cricket despite the challenges of the season.

Accessibility and Inclusion

One of the most powerful aspects of Street cricket is its inclusivity. Clubs are free and require no equipment, making participation easy and accessible. As Ryan points out, “All you need is a pair of trainers, and you’re good to go. We make it as easy as possible for kids to join in.”

This inclusivity is particularly valuable for families facing financial challenges. Ryan explains, “The fact that we provide this kind of entry route into the sport… free of charge helps a lot of families out, especially across lower socioeconomic groups.”

During winter, when opportunities for outdoor activities are limited, Street cricket offers a crucial outlet for physical activity and engagement.

Professional Dedicated Coaching

Our coaches are dedicated to making cricket participation accessible and enjoyable. Reflecting on his role, Ryan shares, “The best part is seeing kids leave with a smile on their face and knowing they’ll come back next week excited to play again.”

Through the challenges of winter, Street cricket continues to provide invaluable opportunities for exercise and social connection, transforming lives along the way. As Ryan puts it, “This isn’t just about cricket; it’s about changing lives and inspiring young people.”
