England cricketers turn out for Brit Insurance National Cricket Day
Alastair Cook, Charlotte Edwards, Graham Onions and Matt Prior are among the England cricketers who are going back to school today (Wednesday 23 June) to help celebrate Chance to Shine on “Brit Insurance National Cricket Day”.
Thousands of school children in primary and secondary schools across the country will join in cricket-themed activity, both in the classroom and in the playground. Cricket assemblies, inter-class games, cricket festivals and staff v pupil matches are some of the activities taking place outside the classroom; while inside the classroom teachers will be using The Cricket Foundation’s “CricEd” educational resource that brings a cricket perspective across the Curriculum. Year 4 pupils at Johanna Primary School in London will, for example, be learning about co-ordinates in maths through identifying players’ positions on a cricket pitch.
Children in Cornwall will be getting out of the school altogether as they take part in a beach cricket festival in the sunshine. Pupils will also try to win the chance to play on the outfield at Lord's during the Pakistan v Australia Test on 14 July by taking part in the MCC Spirit of Cricket video competition.
Chief Executive of The Cricket Foundation Wasim Khan says: “The whole cricket fraternity has really got behind Brit Insurance National Cricket Day with the ECB and PCA providing the ambassadors, a joint flagship event in Cornwall with MCC, County Boards helping with Chance to Shine coaches and The Lord’s Taverners and Slazenger supplying facilities and equipment respectively. It’s a great opportunity for all of us to celebrate cricket in schools and as well as the continued success of Chance to Shine.”
Chance to Shine now involves around 4,000 state schools and has already reached one million boys and girls. Today, a number of the charity’s ambassadors, including Stephen Fry, Jonathan Agnew, David Lloyd and Phil Tufnell, are showing their support by posting tweets. On the ground, male and female cricket ambassadors will be attending the following ten flagship Brit Insurance National Cricket Day events taking place across the country:
Bristol – Alastair Cook and Charlotte Edwards join pupils at St Werbugh’s school
Cardiff – Mike Powell takes part in cricket activity at Melin Gruffydd Primary School in Cardiff
Cornwall – Nick Compton and Caroline Atkins are at the cricket festival on Perranporth beach near Newquay
Darlington – Graham Onions and Danielle Hazell will be at Northwood Primary School
Leeds – Adil Rashid and Katherine Brunt join pupils at Burley Matthias CoE Primary School
London – Matt Prior will be at Johanna Primary School, near Waterloo station
Manchester – Glen Chappell will be at All Hallows Secondary School
Nottingham – Chris Read and Jenny Gunn take part in Milford Primary School’s Brit Insurance National Cricket Day
Winchester – Dominic Cork will help out at Kings Worthy Primary School
